Alternative farming techniques are becoming more popular as lumber prices rise. For this reason, this house plan made an affordable alternative to building easily and available with a metal frame design or, as an upgrade, with 2 x 6 conventional wood framing. The complexity lies in creating an attractive façade that will meet the homeowner’s demands for identity and aesthetics.
This house was created to work with “bolt-up” metal building technology. This is not a metal building that has been “welded up”. A “bolt-up” metal building has the benefit of being able to produce the entire frame in the shop and deliver it to the site ready to be stood up and bolted together in a lot less time. Connections can be welded in weeks or months. Fast assembly is possible with bolt-ups. In comparison to traditional residential construction methods, exterior siding and roofing can be installed on metal buildings much more quickly.
In order to meet code requirements for egress and to provide some sense of styling and a cozy feeling, some liberties were taken in using residential windows and doors. These occurrences are rare and will require blocking, flashing, and possibly welded connections to accommodate them. Although metal studs could easily be used in place of the 2×4 framing on the interior walls. For aesthetic reasons, rough-sawn cedar is also used to frame the front and back porches.
It is advised that customers speak with the local metal building manufacturer to review the blueprints and determine whether it is feasible to construct this home using their systems.
